Black Cohosh

Introduction

Black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) is a Native American herb used to relieve menopausal and pre-menstrual symptoms. It is an alternative to hormone replacement therapy, and has been recommended by the German Commission E for treating cramps, PMS and menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. Black cohosh is believed to limit the secretion of luteinizing hormone or LH, and inhibit its binding to receptors in the hypothalamus. Sudden floods of LH have been linked to hot flashes, headaches and thinning of the vaginal lining. Black cohosh has also been used to treat delayed menstruation. The herb should not be used during pregnancy.
