Introduction

Echinacea purpurea, also known as the purple coneflower, has been one of the most popular herbal supplements used in both the United States and Europe for over a century. The related species Echinacea Angustifolia was first used by native Americans to assist in the alleviation of a variety of infections, colds and flus. Goldenseal, Hydrastis canadensis, contains alkaloids that are generally credited for supporting the upper respiratory tract and mucous membranes. The goldthread and Oregon grape root (both similar in function to goldenseal) are utilized in combination with goldenseal to help minimize the impact on goldenseal's harvest.
