Introduction
Curcuma longa (turmeric) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine. Curcumin is theactive ingredient in turmeric and has been consumed for medicinal purposes for thousands ofyears. First shown to have anti-bacterial activity in 1949, research has since shown curcumin to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-proliferative, anti-parasitic, and anti-malarial properties, as well as cellular maintenance, chemopreventive, hemotherapeutic, wound healing, and pain reducing properties. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) extract contains ursolic acid, which has been shown to suppress tumorigenesis and angiogenesis. Several of these effects of curcumin & ursolic acid are mediated through suppression of the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators produced by cells, all of which come from genes regulated by nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB).
